Best Cheap Date Ideas in Rexburg & Idaho Falls: A Local's Guide to Romance on a Budget
Let’s be honest: being a student in the Snake River Valley usually means your dating budget is competing with your rent and textbook costs. One of the most common questions I get is, "How can I have a great date night without spending my entire grocery budget?"
As someone who has spent plenty of time exploring Eastern Idaho, I’ve realized you don't need a fancy steakhouse to have a meaningful night. Some of my favorite memories have cost less than a gallon of gas. Here is my personal guide to the best cheap date ideas in Rexburg and beyond.
1. The Classic Movie Night: Paramount 5
There is something so nostalgic about the smell of buttery popcorn at the Paramount 5. It’s my go-to for a classic movie night that doesn't break the bank. At just $5 for a matinee or $7 in the evening, it’s the best deal in town. Plus, the vintage theater vibe makes it feel like a real "event" rather than just another night on the couch.

2. Sunset at the Rexburg Temple Gardens
You don't have to be religious to appreciate the peace of the Temple grounds, and offers the best-manicured gardens in the county. For a truly quiet, intimate evening, nothing beats a stroll through the Rexburg Temple Gardens. Sitting at the highest point in the city, it offers a panoramic view of the valley. Watching the sunset hit the horizon from the manicured stone paths is breathtaking and completely free- a perfect escape from the noise of student life.

3. Desert Camfire at the St. Anthony Sand Dunes
If you want to feel like you've traveled to another planet, head 15 minutes north to the St. Anthony Sand Dunes. Building a fire under the massive Idaho stars is an experience you can't get anywhere else. Bring some s'mores supplies and a thick blanket—the desert air gets crisp once the sun goes down, but the glow of the fire makes it incredibly cozy.

4. Window Shopping and the Greenbelt in Idaho Falls
When I need a change of scenery, I head south to the Idaho Falls Greenbelt. Walking the paved paths as the sun sets over the falls is surprisingly sophisticated for a zero-cost date. Pro-Tip: If you have a few extra dollars, stop by Reed’s Dairy on the way back for a scoop of huckleberry ice cream. It’s an East Idaho staple that makes the drive totally worth it.

5. Hidden Campus Gems
Don't overlook what's happening right in your backyard! BYU-Idaho is a goldmine for variety, offering a range of activities from high energy to low energy for any occasion. If you're looking for something lively, the swing dancing nights are an absolute staple- even if you have two left feet, the energy in the room is contagious. On the other hand, if you need a quieter vibe, I’ve found that free gallery openings at the Spori Building or a simple walk through the Horticulture gardens can be just as memorable. Whether it's a $5 talent show or a peaceful art exhibit, campus events keep your social life vibrant and your wallet happy.

Budget Date Essentials
Even on a cheap date, being prepared makes you look like a pro. Here are two items I use that help turn a "hanging out" session into a real date:
- Portable Hammock: Whether you are at Porter Park or up in the canyon, a double-sized camping hammock ($16) is the ultimate "cheap date" hack. It gives you a comfortable place to sit and relax anywhere with two trees.
- Compact Bluetooth Speaker: Music sets the mood. A waterproof portable speaker ($16) is perfect for those bonfire nights at the dunes or a picnic at Nature Park.
